About the Area
The Village of Great Wakering lies between Shoeburyness and Foulness in Essex.
Great Wakering has developed considerably as a residential area around the original village and High Street. In 1900 the War department established ranges on Foulness Island. By 1932 both the population and services had increased and Great Wakering Brick Works was opened at Star Lane with production quickly rising to 13 million bricks per year. There was a resurgence of agriculture with an expansion of market gardening and dairying for the vast Southend market.
Great Wakering is said to have the distinction of being one of the driest places in England with an average annual rainfall of well under 20 inches. Great Wakering, Little Wakering and Barling retain a true village feel with the village Allotments, The Common, Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Community Wood and Duck Pond. There’s an Annual Villager of the Year Competition and an Annual Allotment Competition.
